The boys golf team is starting off to a good season, having many practices in the off-season and the beginning matches.
“I play golf because my brother started off as some random sport and started hitting balls from my backyard and just started liking it and my mom reached out to Mr. Downs. And he said that golf be that opportunity for me to join the team freshman year,” sophomore Isaac Lewis said.
Kyle Downs is the boys golf coach and he takes his job very seriously, he played golf for East in his time here and then played professionally in college. He knows almost everything about the sport and makes sure his players are at their best.
“Golf is a sport where you don’t if you go a week or two without playing you get rusty and it affects your game,” Lewis said.
Lewis said that the biggest problem for the team this year is taking too much time off in between matches and during the off season. The team had optional practices during the off season and many tried to go at least twice a week, but still say they should have practiced more.
Many players on the team are first timers, and Downs and the more experienced players are doing their best to get them used to the game. Trying to get them up to speed isn’t proving to be an issue, many first time players are performing the same or better than more experienced players.
The team’s goal for the season is to win region competition. They are practicing or competing nearly everyday to reach this goal, they will compete at Heritage Hill on Sept. 19 beginning at 8:00 a.m.
