Recent Tornadoes Hit the Southeast
With warmer temperatures comes deadly tornadoes.
Tornadoes ripped through the southeast on Sunday killing several people.
As a result of the tornado, extensive damage was brought about to the southern Alabama community. There are currently 22 fatalities. Unfortunately, it is only the beginning of the annual tornado season.
Tornado season (the period when the most tornadoes strike) is March through June. The Fujita Scale (on the F Scale), is a scale that ranks tornados based on their intensity. They can be ranked from an F-1 to an F-5. On Sunday, tornado warnings were issued from Phenix City, Alabama to Macon, Georgia.
Residents of Lee County in Alabama experienced an F3 tornado. According to the Associated Press, the Lee County Coroner told them he has called in help elsewhere around the state because there were more bodies than his four-person office can handle. As of then, there were still people being pulled out of the rubble.
Not far from Alabama, Georgia was also faced with tornado-like weather. Windows were blown in and trees crashed onto houses. No fatalities were recorded, but electric was out all along the city of Cairo.
Late Sunday night, President Donald Trump tweeted, “To the great people of Alabama and surrounding areas: Please be careful and safe. Tornadoes and storms were truly violent and more could be coming. To the family and friends of the victims, and to the injured, God bless you all!”
As for now, people are being encouraged to stay safe and take extra precautions as a result of the devastating tragedies caused by the tornadoes. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is working with the affected areas to provide aid.
