The Good Versus the Bad in Drills

There are always different point of views on the effectiveness of drills.

Practice makes perfect.

Drills are very serious and should be taken as if it were an emergency.

Safety drills in school are designed to prepare students and teachers for the case of an emergency. Teachers and staff will do anything and everything they can in order to keep themselves and their students safe. Drills are plans put into place at schools, that have the intention of keeping everyone safe in emergencies.

Though some may argue that drills seem to be ineffective, the overall goal is to make students aware of the procedures to perform in the case of an emergency.

On a positive note, having safety drills in schools allow the students to be prepared for a possible tragedy. Whether it be a fire drill, lockdown, or even tornado drill, these drills all work to help maintain order and to ensure the safety of all persons on a school campus.

Some might say that drills are unnecessary because a lot of people just run through the motions. Many goof off, talk to their friends, and fail to take the situation seriously. Even if there isn’t actually a tornado outside, a fire in the building, or an intruder roaming through the halls, students should treat these drills as if they were real, and there was indeed a tornado heading for the school.

In the case of an actual emergency, people would more than likely not just run through the motions. If students and teachers practice drills with the mindset that it is an actual emergency, then drills will be very effective in keeping students prepared for dangerous times.

Though these drills might seem impractical and unnecessary to some, they are in reality a must have in schools. This is because teachers and administrators need to ensure that everyone will be safe in the case of  a tragedy. “I feel like it’s necessary to take the proper emergency percauctions,” said junior Jacob Mitchell.

If there was a fire in the building and no one knew what to do or where to go, the entire situation would be extremely chaotic. It would be next to impossible for teacher to take account of who is safe outside with them and who is in danger and possibly still trapped in the building. This is the reason that they were put into place to begin with.

Practice makes perfect, though some may still feel there will be added problems if the situation of a drill was an actual emergency. “I feel that drills are beneficial in a hypothetical sense but in a real situation it would be chaos,” said junior James Nash. In any tragedy chaos seems to follow, but being prepared for the potential of the chaos could be something to benefit from.

Drills overall are a very effective practice that is important in order to keep everyone safe during emergencies and need to be taken seriously.
