Several schools unite as one band.

Over the weekend, band students from schools across the district came together and hosted a concert at Martha Layne Collins High School.

Several Bullitt East band students auditioned and made the All District Band. Students worked tirelessly at the two-day event. All District band leads to All State Band which is important to many students.

All District Band is a two-day event made up of two bands. “All District Band is essentially a consortium of students from various school districts. The symphonic band was directed by Andrew Putnam and the concert band was directed by Charles Stewart,” said band director, Trevor Ervin. Over the two days, students worked very hard. Each day they practiced for eight hours in order to prepare for the concert.

The All District Band included a total of 160 kids. There were 68 people in the symphonic band and 92 people in the concert band. “There were kids who auditioned from all different high schools and it wasn’t like you had to have a recommendation, you have to actually be good to get in,” said Ervin. About five-hundred students tried out for the band.

The process of trying out wasn’t easy and was very competitive. Out of the 60 trumpet players that tried out, about only 20  made it. “25 Bullitt East students made the band which doesn’t sound like much but you have to think of all the schools in the different counties that also tried out,” said Ervin.

All District Band is part of the process to get into All State which is why it’s important for some students. “It’s a pretty significant accomplishment. It’s the first round in the audition process to All State so its a big deciding factor,” said Semior All District Band member, Kelsey Richardson. Students ultimately worked very hard to get into all district band with the hope of making it to All State.
