Teacher Pension Meeting

Teacher Pension Meeting

School’s out for the Teacher Pension.

With the new teacher pension there will be a session in Frankfort that many teachers seem to want to attend, this gives Superintendent Keith Davis the option to let Bullitt County Schools cancel classes for the day.

Many teachers are upset over the pension and are worried about how it can change their teaching career. School may be letting out so that the teachers can attend the meeting. The pension could affect many teachers in a negative way.

Many teachers seem to plan to attend the meeting. As big as this pension is there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be worried and it is completely understandable to why they plan on attending. It seems that many teachers will be attending this meeting in Frankfort and attend rallies. Math teacher, Debbie Pitcock said, “I do plan on going to Frankfort and attending a rally.”

The board voted 4-0 during the last board meeting allowing Davis to let school out for the day. Many other school districts seem to plan on following suit and cancelling school also. Although the day will have to be made up later in the year it is still a good idea to let out for the day. With as many teachers planning on going there will need to be a lot of substitute teachers to cover all of the teachers planning on going to Frankfort. “School will not be for certain canceled on that day, the board just gave Keith Davis the option to let school out if needed,” said Board Member Debbie Atherton.

The pension will affect many teachers, but mostly those retired or near retirement. Though it does give an advantage to the new and upcoming teachers it is unfair to the ones who have given years of their life to teaching and plan on retiring as a teacher. This can highly affect already retired teachers that come back to work more. That can cause problems because some of the retired teachers can have more experience and know better to what they are doing and better lead a class. “I want to support the teachers retired or nearing retirement, The experience that they have cannot be easily matched and in a lot of cases they are highly needed,” said Atherton.
