Unified for United Nations.

Today, we honor the network of countries who are bound together to improve issues that we face on a global matter.

United Nations Day has been celebrated since Oct. 24, 1948. The United Nations (UN) currently consists of 193 countries. This is a day to celebrate diversity all across the world.

The UN Charter was put into effect on Oct. 24, 1945, becoming a holiday three years later. This document has a preamble and 19 chapters which describe the function of the United Nations in detail.

When the United Nations was first established, it consisted of 51 countries, which included the United States. These countries are known as the “Founding Members.”

The United Nations has five main locations across the globe. These bases are in New York in the United States, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria and Kenya. In these countries, they celebrate this day by doing a range of activities, including concerts, debates and flying the UN flag on important buildings.

The United Nations has assisted in the elimination of smallpox, preserving the pyramids in Egypt, sheltering the ozone layer, improving children’s rights globally and promoting weapon control which are accomplishments that are praised on this day.

United Nations Day is a holiday dedicated to bringing awareness not only to their accomplishments, but to the unity we have on a global matter and the steps we have taken, and still continue to take as a community towards a brighter future.
