Tackling for a Cure
Slamming away breast cancer.
Students from the SLAM class help to organize the annual pink out game to support breast cancer patients and survivors.
SLAM is a leadership class in which students do many things to keep the school thriving. Their most recent mission to conquer is the football pink out game, where they will be in charge of certain special activities and recognitions. This event has always been highly anticipated and is very important to the Mount Washington community.
Amanda Bohnert, SLAM class instructor, says that she is very impressed with how her class is handling the stress of the game, considering that it is such a big event for the community. They have done a number of things to prepare and make it a pleasant experience for everyone. “The slam class sold pink out t-shirts to raise money and also spread awareness and get people wearing the shirts and thinking about the organization in general,” said Bohnert. The class has contacted people who are giving donations and will also be collecting donations at the game.
“We’re honoring honorees in our community and our school that have survived or have lost their battle,” said Bohnert. She says that the pink out game is a good way to show the people who are battling cancer or the ones who have won and even lost their battle, that their struggle is something that we all can recognize as a rough experience. “They have support and they have people who are thinking about them and their situation, care about them and their situation,” said Bohnert.
The slam class has been preparing for this event for a month and a half. They started with selling t-shirts and making posters and flyers that have been hung up around the school. Sophomore Taylor Clemens says that when it comes to being in charge of the booths and taking donations, it is a very stressful process but one that will be worth it in the end. “We have all worked really hard to put this together as a whole class and are hoping that in the end it will be one of the best pink out games that the school has had,” said Clemens.
At the game, all of the honorees will gather together and let pink balloons go to help raise awareness. The game will be against Bullitt Central and the players will also be wearing pink to support.
