Problems with North Korea
Shots fired from North Korea.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) has fired multiple bombs targeted at the United States, but none have gone far enough to hit, they have only alarmed the citizens of America.
Conflict between the United States and North Korea has been on going for decades. Recently, North Korea has threatened to nuke their hated enemy. These allegations could potentially lead to a nuclear war.
Problems first sparked at the beginning of the Korean War when the U.S. was providing military aid for South Korea. In 1953, a ceasefire agreement was signed between North and South Korea. However, a peace treaty has not officially been signed, so the two countries are still in a state of war.
During the Korean War, towns and cities were demolished and huge devastation was set throughout North Korea and small parts of South Korea. North Korea brainwashes their citizens into thinking that the U.S. started the war and uses these events of the war as propaganda.
Social studies teacher, Francis DiStefano, thinks that the biggest conflict originates from how differently the two countries are ran. “They’re a country that has nuclear weapons and throws their own people in gulags,” said DiStefano. “You have to realize that they’re a dictatorship, they’re one of the last Stalinist nations, so their people aren’t like us and they live under oppression.”
North Korea has recently threatened a “merciless strike” against the U.S. involving nuclear bombs. Some are worried, but others don’t think Kim Jong-Un will follow through with his accusations.
Accounting and financing teacher, Daniel Rock is not concerned at all. “We have had wars for years, I don’t see how this is any different from before,” said Rock. “What people don’t realize is that North Korea and American thing has been going on for like ten years, we have a very focus country.”
Freshman social studies teacher Michael Whitfill claims to be a little scared about North Korea’s recent threats. If these statements lead to a nuclear war, he believes that our military is prepared and strong enough to take it on. “There’s nothing you can do to stop the massive missiles they’re (North Korea) threatening,” said Whitfill. He believes from the way Trump is running things, he will lead us into more problems.
As many are aware, there used to be a draft for the war. Letters are sent out to random people selected for the draft. There is no going back once selected, it is mandatory. But only citizens 18 or older are eligible for the draft. This applies to high schoolers because most seniors in their senior year or going into college are or are going to be 18 years old.
“In the hypothetical scenario that I’m getting drafted for nuclear war my opinion doesn’t matter. I have to go no matter what. So instead of being upset I might as well try to take pride in serving my country and focus on doing my best to stay alive,” said senior Tristen Preston.
North Korea has long been threatening the United States, but the question to ask is: when will they actually execute their statements?
