Russell Westbrook Breaks 41
Brodie beats the Oscar Robertson’s regular season triple double record.
Russell Westbrook got his 42 triple double this season surpassing Oscar Robertson’s record.
Beating Robertson’s record puts Russell Westbrook in a better position to win the MVP award. Westbrook is also averaging a triple double for the 2016-17 season. With Westbrook’s historic season, he still may not win the MVP award for the season.
Westbrook’s historic season has made its mark in NBA history. No player other than Oscar Robertson has ever put up 40 triple doubles in as season. The 42 triple doubles Westbrook has put up have created a historic season that NBA fans may never see again, Robertson averaged a triple double more than 50 years ago.
The 42 triple doubles that Westbrook has earned is helping to do something only one other player has done, average a triple double. He is currently averaging 31.9 PPG (points per game), 10.7 RPG (rebounds per game) and 10.4 APG (assist per game). Westbrook is also number one in scoring this year, putting up an impressive 31.9 PPG. Behind him are Isaiah Thomas and James Harden whom are not even averaging 30 PPG.
A historic season by Westbrook still may not be enough for him to win MVP. This is not the first time this has happened. Oscar Robertson also averaged a triple double and did not win the MVP award. Behind Westbrook in the MVP race is former teammate James Harden, Kawhi Leonard and Lebron James. Harden especially believes he should win MVP. “I thought winning is what this is about, period” said James Harden (via Sportscenter). Harden believes that he should win MVP because winning more games is what matters most of all. Westbrook still has good odds of winning MVP even as his team sits at 6th seed.
