A New Identity brings a New Future for the Football Team
A season towards the future.
The Bullitt East Charger football team finished this season with a record 3-7 with a totally new coaching staff in place.
The team went through an up and down season as their record indicates. Junior running back Hunter Perdew, senior Wide out Konnor Polson, and senior Zak Kessler had great seasons. With a strong senior class graduating, there are still many who will lead the team next year.
The team started this season slow as they came out with four straight losses before getting their first victory over Nelson County. Offensively, the Chargers had a great game plan and could execute game in and game out. The trouble came from the defensive side of the football as they scored 149 points through their first 4 games, but gave up 196 points to opposing offenses. This pattern continued throughout the whole season. The Chargers gained wins over Nelson County, county rival North Bullitt, and then Oldham County. They were able to squeak into playoff contention. Their season ended in the first round, when they traveled to Madison Southern and took a 32-13 loss.
The Chargers had several standout seasons from individuals, the biggest being from Polson, Kessler and Perdue. Perdue lead 5A in rushing yards with 1,918 yards on 197 carries. He also added in the second largest amount of touchdowns within the top 20 stat leaders with 20 touchdowns. Polson was apart of the top 20 receiving leaders as well. He had 33 receptions for 569 yards and added in 7 touchdowns. Kessler was apart of the top 20 passing leader this season within 5A as he threw 172 times and completed 86 of them. He threw for 1,537 yards and had 19 touchdowns with 6 interceptions.
With many starting seniors graduating, there are still many juniors ready to step up their roles on the field. Of course, you will have a strong running game next year with Perdue returning. The Chargers will also see returns from offensive and defensive lineman Jacob Darnell and Zeke Kern. They will also have Logan Mckenna coming back as well. With the introduction into a new system this year under new head coach Mark Sander, the Chargers may be able to get more comfortable on both sides of the ball for next season as they look to get the program back into a winning tradition.
