Girls Golf Season Recap

An Eagle of a Season

Started off shaky, finished out strong.

The Bullitt East Girls Golf Team started off their year with only three golfers. Therefore, they were not able to qualify as a team, until foreign exchange student, Margherita Battistotti, joined the golf team. But after the Nelson County match on August 22, Karli Yarbrough left the team leaving the girls with only three players again, not being able to post a team score for the rest of the year.

“It’s never fun losing a teammate,” said sophomore golfer, Alyssa Shepherd. Yarbrough was on the team for two years and she was greatly missed throughout the year. But the team did not dwell on it. Instead, as the season went on, each player posted a career high.

Although each girl had a great season, only one made it to state. Battistotti, shot an 86 in regionals to advance to state. “I feel like I have done everything I could to go there, because I really wanted to go,” said Battistotti. She went on to shoot an 89 in state. Which was just eight strokes short of making the cut for the second day.

Battistotti was a blessing for the golf team, bringing success, joy, and happiness. “I had a blast working with her. She is a really fun, funny girl to be around, I just really enjoyed being around her and coaching her,” said Coach Steinmetz. Unfortunately, this is her only year at Bullitt East because she is a foreign exchange student and she will return to her hometown in Italy after she graduates.

Emily Harp, senior golfer, is also graduating this year, leaving only one golfer on the team. But, Steinmetz has already began to recruit middle schoolers. Including a 7th grader who has won the middle school championship the past two years. There are also several other golfers he has recruited that he believes he can coach to be legitimate golfers by their sophomore year.

So for Bullitt East Girls Golf, the legacy continues.
