Homecomings Homecoming

We’re bringing homecoming back.

In recent weeks many students have requesting that Bullitt East have a homecoming dance again.

Some students have sent around petitions in hopes of getting this dance. There are people who strongly believe that we should have a homecoming dance and others who don’t. The last homecoming dances were cancelled due to lack of interest but many students are hopeful that they can make this one bigger and better.

Sophomores Taylor Montague and Carly Witt are some who have strongly pushed to have a homecoming dance again. They have created petitions both virtual and handwritten to have a homecoming dance. One of the petitions is nearing 150 signatures.

There are many different opinions on the possibility of a new homecoming dance. Some people are strongly for it and others are strongly against it. Witt and Montague want one because they feel that there is not a lot of events for underclassmen and they feel somewhat left out of school dances. Witt said “A lot of other schools have the dance. Unlike the upperclassmen, the freshmen and sophomores have nothing to look forward to during the school year.” Senior Jared Osborne beloved that homecoming is something that Bullitt East has been missing out on. “Yes. I think events like this brings a school closer together” Osborne said.

Other students like senior, Matt Childress don’t think we should have a homecoming dance. “I just think people aren’t thinking it through enough. We had one a few years ago and nobody went which is the reason we don’t have them anymore. Plus everybody wants it to be formal but when it comes time to have it not everyone is going to want to show up to a basketball game in shirts and ties and dresses,” said Childress.

In an online poll conducted by the Livewire 70 percent said that they would like to have homecoming dances at Bullitt East. Some of these students would like to have the event formal others don’t want to it be too formal. You

Montague and Witt have worked very hard to try and generate interest for the event. The two hope that they can get this event happening again and would be very proud of themselves for doing so. “Just knowing this started off as a small idea that me and my best friend Carly Witt had and then comparing it to where the idea is now or even where the idea will be in the future is crazy. Knowing we helped bring this idea back up in school and possibly changing homecoming week and giving it something a little extra, it’s going to be an amazing feeling,” said Montague.

Montague hopes to improve these dances by letting the students have a say in the event deciding things such as music, theme, etc. Montague believes that this event will have more interest as times progresses. “Every school year brings in a new set of kids with a new set of interests. I’ll agree that school dances are not always a first choice when it comes to what you wanna do on a weekend. You can be out with friends and having parties and bonfires and whatever else. I definitely don’t expect this to be a huge thing the very first year. It will have to grow. Every year you find something to change and I think the biggest thing about it is giving the students a say,” said Montague.
