A Long Way From Home

We’re not in Austria anymore.

Magdalena Horejs, better known as Magdi, is one of Bullitt East’s newest foreign exchange students.

Horejs is a 15 year old sophomore originally from Austria. She came to the Unites States for the opportunity to meet new people, polish her English skills, and more. She is adapting well and enjoying her time at Bullitt East.

Horejs decided to come to America for many reasons. The decision to come was easy for her. “I decided to go to America because I wanted to improve my English skills, meet new people, find new friends, get to know with a completely new culture and find a new family which stays for life time,” Horejs said.

Horejs enjoys hanging out with her friends and going to the movies in her free time. Her favorite class is Foods and Nutrition with Mrs. Kendrick. Horejs’s host family is the Barr’s, who consist of Troy, Crystal, Summer, and Kemper all of whom work or attend Bullitt East.

She had many different emotions on her first day at Bullitt East. The transition was easy for her even though BE is different than her previous school.

“Well I was very nervous and excited on the first day because everything was new. Going to each teacher and talking to people I have never met in every class was different. People I talk the most to on my first day are those I am quite close to now,” said Horejs.

The thing she misses the most from home is her best friend. However, she fits in well with the other students and has made many new friends. She also gets along well with her host family.

“We love having Magdi around. She is very easy going and gets along great with our family. We couldn’t ask for a better fit. We keep pretty busy, and she is always willing to go wherever we go, and is up for new experiences.” said Crystal Barr.

Many people have grown close to her and will miss her when she returns to Austria in June.

“When she leaves it will be hard because I have spent so much time getting to know

her & getting close with her,” said Kemper Barr.

Helena Koegler, one of Horejs’s friends who is also a foreign exchange student, plans to keep in touch with her when she goes home. They have grown close and have made plans to meet up with each other once they both go home.
