The Big Four Bridge was lit up teal for all of Louisville to see on September 20 and 21 in recognition of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
The lighting initiative was organized by Ovarian Awareness of Kentucky (OAK), which has been a driving force in raising awareness about ovarian cancer and honoring survivors.
“This is the third time the bridge has been lit up,” said OAK volunteer Michelle Bibee.
In addition to the bridge lighting, OAK hosts the annual Whisper Walk, a silent event that celebrates ovarian cancer survivors.
“It’s a whisper walk because, just like the walkers, the symptoms of ovarian cancer can also be silent,” Bibee said.
Ovarian cancer begins with the growth of abnormal malignant cells in the ovaries. It is often harder to detect than many other cancers, as it cannot be identified through a Pap smear, leading to frequent misdiagnoses.
Women of any age can develop ovarian cancer, but the risk increases with age. The cause remains largely unknown, though some theories suggest that genetic errors may occur due to the repeated “wear and tear” of monthly egg release, while increased hormone levels before and during ovulation might stimulate the growth of abnormal cells.
Symptoms include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary issues such as urgency or frequency. Other possible symptoms include fatigue, indigestion, back pain, pain during intercourse, constipation, and menstrual irregularities. However, these symptoms can result from various medical problems, making early detection of ovarian cancer particularly challenging.
OAK hopes that the lighting of the bridge will draw more attention to the fight against ovarian cancer.

Hello readers of the Livewire, I know this is very unorthodox but I would like to say a few words because this topic is very close to home for me. Ovarian Cancer is a monstrous disease because it’s hard to detect and is easily misdiagnosed as other things. Please if you can be affected by Ovarian Cancer be aware , and if you can’t be affected please help get the word out. For more information please go to oakky.org. I’ve lost someone, you don’t need to lose someone too. Rest well Pat Bibee and everyone else lost in the battle. I love you Grana.
