Bullitt East welcomes a new team to the community.
Girls flag football is the newest addition to Bullitt East’s vast selection of sports and it’s the first of its kind at Bullitt East.
Many students have already signed up for this unique team and are eager to start this season. Kayla Least is the new head coach of the girls flag football team. Although this is her first year with this team, she has plenty of coaching experience having served as head coach of the tennis team for three years and currently an assistant coach for golf. She doesn’t anticipate any conflicts among the girls since they’ve already worked together on the Powder Puff team.
“So I thought that it would be a fun idea for the girls. I know how much they love powder puff, and I was excited to be a part of the first year being on something and getting it going.” Least said.
She was very eager to get this team together and to see what the girls could do. Most of the players come from separate sports like volleyball, basketball, and softball. Least also has practices planned out with her assistant coach, they plan to do sprints, drills, and other qualities that focus on both offense and defense.
“So he has them split up into different things, working on defense and offense, splitting that up, and working on grabbing flags and just athleticism. So I know there’s going to be some sprint and stuff involved going defense. We will also have some classroom time to learn plays and different stuff, offense, and defense.” Least said.
Everyone is looking forward to this season. Coach Least is excited about the experience and really thinks the girls will enjoy it. However, the players have many different expectations of what this team might bring them.
“I expect the team to help me improve my athletic abilities and I enjoy playing sports in general. My family is football-centered right now.” Alexa Vititoe said.
There are many different ways and reasons everyone got together to make this team but they are all excited to get the year started“My main motivation for trying out is being able to tell people I made it because I’d be very proud of myself.” Jaidyn Wheatley said.
The opportunity to be part of this growing team has generated lots of excitement among the players. Having an assistant coach who can relate well to the young players will be important for setting rules and expectations for the team. With hard work and teamwork, the team can overcome difficulties and succeed on the field.
“Obviously, if we’re gonna do this, we want to do it right, and let’s go out to win.” Least said.
Creating a team environment where each player feels important and comfortable is key. . The coach’s job isn’t just improving skills but also building confidence, teamwork, and good sportsmanship in her players, therefore, getting them ready for the field. By working together and building confidence in one another, the team can grow a supportive foundation for the team.
“The coaches really work us hard to be prepared for real games. I also like the way they discipline us. I feel like with the right discipline, we’ll grow into a very supportive team.” Said Ella Hite.
