Tonya Saylor is one of Bullitt East’s new early childhood teachers, excited to join the Charger Nation.
Saylor is excited to join the Charger family. She recently moved from her classroom of 18 years at Bardstown High School, where she was a Family and Consumer Science teacher. Though it’s been a big move she is still ready and excited for the school year. Saylor says she has been busy organizing her new room to make it a cozy and inviting place for her students to be.
Saylor found her passion in high school “I had a teacher in high school who was a great and supportive mentor to me. I decided to teach high school because I wanted to be that kind of mentor to my students, Saylor said.
Saylor attended Berea College on a full-tuition scholarship, where she earned her B.A. in Child and Family, with a concentration in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. Saylor later attended Western Kentucky University and earned her M.S. in Library and Media Education.
In Saylor’s free time she enjoys spending time with family and her three dogs; Saylor also enjoys spending her time in nature. During summer when she’s not teaching, Saylor raises butterflies to give her something to do in her free time. Saylor raises them from eggs, to caterpillars, to chrysalis, and finally beautiful butterflies. “I’ve raised Monarchs, Eastern Black Swallowtails, Pipevine Swallowtails, Red Spotted Purples, and Spicebush Swallowtails,” Saylor said.
Saylor is ready to get to know Bullitt East staff and her students better. Saylor is also very excited to get FCCLA started in Bullitt East. Also known as the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America . Saylor would love to see her student compete in the STARS events which is the Families Acting for Community Traffic.
Saylor’s family has lived in Mount Washington for the last 17 years, so coming to Bullitt East has let her teach close to home. Saylor has a daughter who is currently attending Eastside Middle School and has a son who is a sophomore at Bullitt East, so her new job allows her to be closer to her children. Saylor has heard the rave about Bullitt East staff and students and is thrilled to start teaching. “I am so excited to join the Charger Family! I appreciate how welcoming and helpful everyone has been.” Saylor said.
