A new and eager face has been welcomed into Bullitt East.
Derrick Reed is the newest addition to the mathematics department in second hall.
This is Reed’s first year at Bullitt East and he’s looking forward to the students he’ll meet and the opportunities he’ll be able to have as a new teacher.
Reed has had a handful of teaching experiences through substituting at both Fort Campbell High School and Fort Knox Middle School. Reed has been in the community for many years and finally chose Bullitt East for their amazing selection of sports teams and the sense of community here.
Reed is a veteran in the military after serving for 20 years. His father is a large inspiration for him in his life and influences a lot of his views. “I started out in the military and that was one that was a brand new path, my dad gave me some advice, “ Reed said. “I’ve known a number of World War II veterans throughout my life, and one thing I’ve observed about them all at once is that they all claimed they never wanted to be called the ‘Greatest Generation,’ at least not for themselves. Additionally, it somewhat connects to what my father said to me when I first introduced him to his grandchild. Make this the best generation yet, he said, and it was immediately apparent to him that his father had told him as much”.
He wants his students to strive towards their best selves in his classroom. Reed wants to try his best to follow his fathers advice about making anyone who walks into his classroom the greatest generation. This is the first time Reed has taught with other teachers and he explains how his main challenge will be working with other teachers and being on the same page about things in their classrooms. “This will be the first time I’ve taught with other teachers on the same subject. So one of the big challenges I face is learning how to work with other teachers and trying to keep pace and keep things similar and at the same time, react to the things that are going on in the classroom,” said Reed.
