Her favorite art movement is impressionism; she hopes to make an impression on her students.
Lauren Kersey is now one of two Bullitt East visual art teachers.
Kersey found a love for teaching in college. She’s an artist herself. Kersey believes art can be a safe space.
Kersey went to Western Kentucky University. She’d always loved art, but at WKU she realized she wanted to teach art. “I had a passion for teaching it as well,” Kersey said.
Still, she’ll always be an artist herself. Kersey considers herself a traditional artist. She loves graphite and oil paintings in particular. Her favorite artists include Vincent van Gogh and Frida Kahlo. “I’ve always loved art,” Kersey said.
Kersay will be teaching the Visual Art 1 and Art History and Appreciation classes this year. She’s both excited to have more students coming into art and excited for the art classes to have more space once construction is complete in the future. The arts are undeniably important within schools. They offer creativity, and for many, a safe space. “I believe that students need a safe space in order to really learn,” Kersey said.
