The Lady Chargers tennis team has had both great successes and challenges throughout the course of this week.
On April 16, they hosted J-Town on their home courts, with Kennedy Scott, Paige Halbrook, and Lily Merkle winning their singles matches. That same day, Halbrook and Scott both won singles matches against players from Pleasure Ridge Park. “I think our past few matches have been a lot better than they’ve ever been. Our team knows how to work together and we’ve all figured out how best to support each other so I feel like our recent matches have reflected that,” Halbrook said. Working together has been a core strength of the team since the beginning of the season, especially with the introduction of their new JV team.
However, the team lost all three of their singles matches to both Kentucky Christian Day on April 18 and Central Hardin on April 17. “I do think that we need to improve on our mental game. I feel like we’re very competitive so we get too in our heads when we play,” Halbrook said. The team later found success against Holy Cross at home on April 22, where Liz Swift and Emma Wallace won both of their singles matches. Although they had losses this week, the players are aware of some improvements they need to make moving forward.
Coming up, they still have multiple rival games, including against county rival Bullitt Central. “I’m really looking forward to the Bullitt Central match because they’re our rivals and I always play the same girl and I love seeing how we’ve both improved throughout the year,” Halbrook said.
Their next match will be against Mercy on April 25 at home at 3:30, which is also a very significant match, as Mercy is their district rival.
