A new opportunity for Bullitt East artists.
The Bullitt County Public Library’s art showcase is giving artists an opportunity to shine.
Starting on March 1, the Bullitt County Public Library is providing space for artists from Bullitt East and other surrounding schools to display their art. Students in East’s art classes have been inspired to submit their own work to be in the showcase. “I have over 120 students, plus 30 or 40 from last year. All of them are invited to participate, but not all of them will. So you know, maybe we’ll end up with 100, but there should be more art pieces than that. Some people are bringing multiple pieces,” Jason Kelty, East’s art teacher said. Kelty has encouraged his students to bring in any art they are proud of.
Students believe the art showcase will provide a chance to publicly present their art in a way they’ve never experienced before. With many wanting to pursue an art career, this opportunity has provided them a chance to put themself and their work out there. “I think a lot of other students find joy in being able to present their art publicly for the first time and really start their journey into the art world,” Moe Via, one of Kelty’s AP students said. The showcase has given artists a chance to connect with other students who share a love for art.
Not only are artists given the chance to connect with one another, but the showcase has provided a learning opportunity for them going forward. This experience has shown them how to present themselves and their art in a professional way. “The biggest thing is opportunity, particularly understanding [that] art can be public. So for them to realize that they can speak to others through their art is pretty important. Also, just the professional presentation. Sometimes we get a little sloppy or lack craftsmanship, and I think this is elevating their goal to be professional,” Kelty said. He hopes that his students will be more active in publicizing their art.
Overall, this opportunity has given artists the ability to express themselves and display their passions. Those participating have the chance to share a very important part of their lives with others. “I have been doing art all of my life and it is the one definite defining fact of what makes me me. It will forever be a part of my life as well as it being my future career in the tattooing industry,” Via said. The art display will be up for the entirety of March.
