Right on the mark.
The archery team is continuing their season with determination and is working to strengthen their performances over the rest of the year. They have had five tournaments so far, coming in first place for three of them and second place for two of them. Their most recent tournament was the Eastside Active Heroes Charity Tournament on Feb. 3, where the first team of archers scored a combined 3313.
A lot of the archers still want to improve personally and have set high goals for themselves. “I hope to get over 295 this season,” junior Graicey Greenwell said. To get there, however, it has been necessary to keep certain strategies in mind. “They taught me this [strategy] in elementary school, and it’s to not look at your parents, because they’ll change your emotion or mood or how you’re thinking, so I try to not look at the audience at all because it’ll mess with you mentally,” Greenwell said.
The team has also been closely following the advice of their coaches in order to succeed. “Definitely listen to what your coaches are saying most of the time. They know what they’re doing. If they don’t, then obviously they shouldn’t be your coach,” senior Jacob Campbell said. Overall, the team is trying their best to improve both their focus and consistency, which can be some of the most challenging aspects of the sport as a whole. “It’s hard to stay consistent in the same thing every time,” Campbell said.
One thing that makes the team special is their close bond and the friendships that have formed from the archery program. “I get to grow with them outside of the sport,” Greenwell said. “I love my teammates, and they encourage me to grow every day.”
The team’s next tournament will be the 1st Annual Reid Cornell Memorial Tournament on Feb. 23-24 at Bullitt East.
