As winter guard prepares for the season ahead of them, they are sharing the love, and getting ready for the hours of rehearsal to reach success.
With winter guard auditions starting Dec. 2, members have begun practicing. “My individual role is to help people and to make sure that they know what they’re doing,” one of the team leaders, Molly Rushing, said. The process is simple: you miss a step, you practice again, until you nail it. Whether it’s practice at school, or at home, the team is prepared to do what it takes to get every step down. Rushing is prepared to work on improving her leadership skills, and do what she can do to get the team where they need to be.
As with most teams, winter guard came to win. “Getting a better score eats competition,” team leader Savannah Bayton said. Although the process to get there takes a lot of energy, and even more time, the team getting to be together through it all makes it worth it. “My favorite thing is to be with all the people that I love, and I get to hang out with everyone,” Rushing said. With such a close knit group of people, Bayton loves being able to help her team, and the close bond between all of the members is motivation to succeed. “I hope that we can get some good scores and that maybe we can win a couple competitions,” Rushing said.
To clear up the common misconception before this season starts: winter guard is not the same thing as color guard. “In color guard there’s marchers and there’s a band, and in winter guard it’s just music,” Bayton said. Winter guard is filled with practices and events indoors, extravagant performances, and flamboyant uniforms that are sure to amuse those who come to support the team this season.
Winter guard is having their first performance on Feb 3, 2024 versus Owen County. Go see the team shine for yourself.
